Hello!
Welcome to Georgia Studies! I am extremely passionate about this class, and I'm excited to guide students as they navigate our country's complex history and its civic structure. I believe Social Studies education is the vehicle our young people can and will use to become informed and productive citizens, regardless of the career path he or she chooses. In this class, students will examine:
The 2016-2017 school year is my fourteenth year in the classroom. I moved to Atlanta from Michigan in 2002. At that time, I assumed moving to the city was an experiment, but, over a decade later, I am still here and I am still loving all the city has to offer. In my time at Sutton, I have seen the school nearly double in student population, change buildings (twice), and establish itself as a competitive option for North Cluster families. My goal is EXCELLENCE. I want my class to be THE BEST. I want my students to excel at the HIGHEST levels, and I want our school to be THE NUMBER ONE middle school in Atlanta.
I firmly believe all students will leave this class in May having grown as citizens, thinkers, students, and young adults. As they will soon find out, this class is not just about history and government. It is about LIFE--who we are, what we want, where we've been, and how we best move forward.
Please feel free to contact me with questions, concerns, or just to chat. Email is always the best way to get a quick answer. Parent conferences are held on Mondays during connections time (TBA). If you are unable to meet then, please email me and we'll set up another time.
I am still riding high on the momentum from last year's group of 8th Graders, and I am absolutely looking forward to hitting the ground running this year!

I believe Social Studies education is the vehicle our young people can and will use to become informed and productive citizens, regardless of the career path he or she chooses. In this class, students will examine:
- The way today's political, social, and economic challenges are rooted in the past
- Lessons, if any, we can learn from the past
- Patterns of human behavior, motivations, and decision making
- How local, state, and federal governments work
- How citizens can participate in government so it works for them
- The dynamic nature of national and state values
- What does it mean to be a Georgian?
- What does it mean to be an American?
- Current events and their connections to our past and future
- How we can act and/or advocate for positive change and the common good
